Spring Break April 1st? Hit the ski hill in costume.

Most colleges and universities take spring break in March, with the big weeks being March 5-23, 2012. Why go south and laze around on a beach when you can spend your spring break skiing or snowboarding some of the nation’s best ski areas in Jackson Hole, Wyoming? Snow King Resort’s Ski All 3 package makes it affordable to get luxury lodging and the opportunity to ski at the area’s famous ski resorts.

Skiing and snowboarding are healthy, alternative ways to spend your spring break. Downhill skiing and snowboarding burn about 400 calories per hour, give your legs a great workout and even have cardiovascular benefits. Read more about the benefits. And, well, it’s just super fun!

Why Jackson?

Cowboy powder. Sick skiing. Friendly folks. Grand views. Clean mountain air. Fabulous night life. Excellent DJ scene. Real-live cowboys. There are too many good reasons that Jackson Hole (JH) is the perfect place for college students to spend spring break.

“I did the ski bum thing in Jackson Hole, slinging drinks by night at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar to finance billion-dollar-view skiing by day, and I lived through the nightlife and the c-c-cold days in cultured cowboy-ville to tell you Jackson is the best of the best ski towns around. And they welcome college students–believe it.” — Kathleen Crislip

Take advantage of the Snow King “Ski All 3 Package”

Snow King resort’s Ski All 3 package is unique in Jackson Hole. It’s like having an interchangeable lift ticket! This package allows you to choose, on a daily basis, which of Jackson Hole’s three ski areas you would like to visit. Choose between Snow King Ski Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort. Package includes Lodging at Snow King Resort, lift tickets at your chosen ski resort, daily breakfast buffet at the Atrium restaurant, skier shuttle to JHMR and Grand Targhee, and transfers between Jackson Hole Airport and Snow King Resort. Prices start at $257 per person per stay based on double occupancy in a standard hotel room staying for three nights and skiing two days.

Ski the “King”: Snow King Ski Hill

Snow King Ski Resort Night Skiing

The town hill has a variety of ski and snowboard terrain, including one run, Upper Exhibition, rumored to be the steepest in-bounds run on the continent. Snow King is the only area resort open for night skiing (Tuesday through Saturday until 8 p.m.) and it’s 2 for 1 on Tuesdays.

If you’re not a skier or snowboarder, check out the Snow Tubing on the Snow King hill. Read a review of Snow King.

If you’re lucky enough to be on spring break March 11-13, you can check out the Town Hill Ski Race that takes place annually at Snow King. Watch racers from kids to former Olympians duke it out on the steep slope.

“Snow King offers a little bit of everything without being crowded.” –Bill Briggs, founder of Snow King’s Great American Ski School and the first person to ski the Grand Teton (in 1971).

Nightlife around the Town Square:

The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar–saddles for barstools–giddy up!

Koshu Wine Bar – Thursdays and Saturday nights the DJ spins ’til 2:00 a.m.

The Silver Dollar Bar at the Wort – Classic Wyoming bar. Get ready to swing dance.

The Town Square Tavern – Usually the last stop before the quick cab ride back to Snow King.

Ride “Big Red” to the top of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort (JHMR)

VC Shot Ski photo from VillageCafeJH.com

If you’re an expert skier or snowboarder, you can consider riding the newish, 100-person tram, aka “Big Red,” to the summit at 10,450 ft. of the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. This will give you a 4000+ vertical ft. drop down some of the nation’s gnarliest terrain.

If you’re a novice skier, stick with the right side of the mountain or mid-mountain runs. Take the gondola up to find challenging blue runs and/or a nice spot to have lunch overlooking the Jackson Hole Valley.

If your spring break happens on April 1st you can take part in all the fun that is “Gaper Fool’s Day.” It’s no joke, people dress up in costume to go skiing. Watch out for giant bunnys skiing double black diamonds, a plethora of 80′s ski clothing and moves, colored wigs, and way too many old school one-piece suits. Too much fun.

Obligatory Apres:

Start at the Village Cafe, or what locals call “the VC”, for a slice of pizza and maybe a pass at the shot ski. Take it easy, though, because the high altitude increases alcohol’s effects.

Walk due south to the world-famous Mangy Moose Saloon for some truffle fries and maybe some live entertainment. Remember, dancing in ski boots is something everyone should do at least once a lifetime!

Rinse and repeat.

Have a Taste of the “Best Powder on Earth” at Grand Targhee Resort

Fresh Powder at Grand Targhee

Take the Snow King shuttle over the hill to Grand Targhee Resort, which is a more “Colorado-esque” resort situated on the western slope of the Tetons in Alta, Wyoming, accessible only through Teton Valley. It receives a ton of light powder snow (more than 500 inches annually) and its lack of lift lines creates an uncrowded skier and snowboarder paradise. Get going early and plan on spending the whole day over there.

Post-Powder Play:

Ski up to the Trap Bar and Grille for après and music.

Head down the hill to Wildlife Brewing in Victor, ID for awesome beer and pizza.

Once you get back over the Teton Pass, stop in Wilson at the Stagecoach. Get some free popcorn and shoot some pool at this “locals” bar. If it’s Thursday, that means Disco Night: Dress up and boogie down. If it’s Sunday night, that means “Church” or when the Stagecoach Band plays cowboy music and people enthusiastically western swing dance.

What to Pack

Jackson Hole is the land of extremes. One minute it could be 30 degrees and the next 30 below. Plan and pack accordingly. Here are some suggestions of what to bring along. Don’t worry if you forget something, Jackson has plenty of shopping to be had from super-swanky boutiques to equipped outdoor stores to the always-fun thrift shop, Browse n’ Buy. If you don’t have ski stuff, there are plenty of rental options.

Pack Properly:

Warm hat, ski gloves and ski socks

Water-resistant ski or snowboard jacket

Insulating layer, such as a down sweater or Polartec jacket

Mid-weight, synthetic or wool base layer

Ski or snowboard boots

Skis or snowboard

Ski poles

Ski helmet

Goggles

Snow boots

Casual clothing for going out

Sunscreen

About Snow Biking

Snow Bike Experts Cary Smith and David Hunger

Snow biking most likely started when the Iditabike race started in 1987 using the same route of the Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska. Like these arduous races, snow biking is definitely tough, but it’s gaining in popularity nevertheless.

According to Simon Rankower from allweathersports.com in Alaska, snow biking is “more interesting and fun than riding on the dirt. And talk about power riding–wait until you go on your first ride in about four to six inches of powder. Riding in the snow is hard and technical. 10 miles in the snow is like 20 miles on a dirt trail.“

It’s great way to stay in shape for your summer mountain biking and may even improve your bike handling skills.

Snow biking also generates a lot of heat since it’s so strenuous. Like all cardio winter sports, dress in layers! Start with a wool or synthetic base layer, top that with a lightweight insulation layer like a Nano Puff vest, and cover those with a waterproof shell or riding jacket, depending on the temperatures. Heavy tights made out of Polartec or something similar are a must to keep your legs, and especially your knees, warm. Cloudveil “Run Don’t Walk” tights are a good example. Lobster gloves or ski gloves will keep your hands warm, but will have enough dexterity for shifting gears and braking.

“Pedal smoothly and relax your upper body, especially on ice and soft snow.

When the bike starts going sideways, make small corrections rather than over steering and weaving down the trail. Practice riding in a straight line when the trail is good so it’s easier under bad conditions.

On some soft trails, higher speeds take less effort than lower speeds, because your tires sink into the snow less at higher speed.

Snow machines leave the center of the trail soft. Their best tracks are left by their skis, if you can ride straight enough to use them.

Road ice can provide lots of traction or very little. Learn how the different types look and sound. Try not to brake hard on the slippery sort, or if you must, use only your rear brake. Watch for dry patches where you can do your braking or turning.”

Where to Snow Bike in the Jackson Hole Area

There are plenty of places to ride your snow bike in the Jackson Hole area. Groomed Nordic trails, snowmobile groomed trails, snowmobile “singletrack,” and winter roads are good choices. In Jackson, Cache Creek is a great place to start since it’s groomed twice weekly and has a pretty gentle grade. The Hagen Trail, which can be accessed at the Cache Creek trail head can be a good if there isn’t too much snow and is a bit more climbing. Check the Jackson Hole Community Pathways Winter Trail Map for more ideas on where to go and info on grooming/plowing days and times.

Snow King hill, of course, is a great place to ride, but the grade is, well, not-so-gentle. Ride the jeep road up after the resort closes or on Monday’s for an epic challenge.

Drive over the Teton Pass to Teton Valley for numerous winter biking options. Teton and Horseshoe Canyons are obvious picks for beginners as they are groomed and offer gentle grades. Grand Targhee Resort features more advanced trails. Check out this blog post, Experts in the FAT since 2007, on Fitzgerald’s website for more info about where to ride and great trail etiquette tips.

“Now the greater Teton area has become a mecca for Winter Fat Biking and the people rejoice as their legs are prepared for the Spring riding like never before and the lack of a powder day offers a wondrous opportunity to explore new lands.” — Scott Fitzgerald

The “King Tubes” Snowtubing park is OPEN! Thanks to a lot of hard work and dedication the tube park opened Sunday, December 18th for the season – just in time for the Holiday rush.

Snow Tubing is a “no-skill-required” Winter sport. Our rope tow hauls you and your tube up the hill so there’s really very little effort involved, just FUN as you fly down the groomed track. It’s a speed oriented ride, go down by yourself or link tubes with your friends and all ride down together – then take the rope tow back up and do it again!

King Tubes is open on weekends from 11:30am-6:30pm and Tuesday through Friday from 2:30pm-6:30pm. There will be special hours for the Holiday Week – check the hotline for details 307-734-8823. The website has lots of information, videos, pictures and a webcam. You need to be at least 42” tall and if you’re under 18 years old you’ll need a parent or legal guardian present to sign your release. www.jacksonholesnowtubing.com

Rates are $16 for a 1-hour adult session, $21 for a 2-hour session and Juniors/Seniors are $13 for a 1-hour session, $18 for a 2-hour session.

King Tubes is easy to find at the western-most base of Snow King Mountain Ski Area, the corner of Snow King Avenue & Cache Street – just 6 blocks off the Town Square. You’ll know you’re there when you hear the noise of laughter (and SCREAMING!). Come give it a try – you’ll be back for more!

Summit Lift opens!

Today we opened the Summit lift to the top of Snow King Mountain!
It’s a beautiful blue-sky day today, temps in the lower 20s – just perfect.
We’ve only had 34 inches of snowfall up top but we’ve retained a nice 14” base – it’s holding up well. Obviously there are obstacles but we’re doing better than many ski areas around the country. 18” of man-made snow at the base makes for fun cruising and the ski teams have been getting some excellent race practice in.

We also opened the beginner rope tow today and it was BUSY with lots of folks taking lessons and learning to ski and snowboard. What a perfect spot to learn, a nice gentle slope with great instructors. Little kids mixing with adults, really fun to watch. Our newest snowgun made a TON of snow, the grooming crew pushed it out, smoothed it down and it’s just perfect now.

We should be opening “King Tubes”, the Snow Tubing Park, tomorrow – will keep you posted. Rafferty’s lift will open as conditions improve, still need to make a little more snow but its getting really close.

Come on out – the mountain is in great shape for what snow has fallen.
Thanks for supporting Snow King Mountain!
